The Skinny Casa Kalika is a five-bedroom, 10,000-square-foot villa on the Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course in the Four Seasons Punta Mita community . In fact, its name means “golf course” in Basque (the owner’s native tongue), but a staid clubhouse this is not.

The Look Designed by native son Guillermo Michel Renteria, the villa combines palapa-style architecture, Mexican art and custom-made, locally sourced furnishings with Balinese imports, global objets collected acquired during travels to the South Pacific and the Seychelles and the occasional accent piece by Philippe Starck.

Would Suit Zen-seekers. If a stay at Casa Kalika doesn’t get you closer to nirvana, nothing will.

Room to Nab One of the three king-size master suites, all of which have 1000 thread count linens, en-suite bathrooms with marble Jacuzzi tubs and completely retractable walls.

The Wow The amenities: An infinity salt water pool, a rooftop terrace, access to two private beach clubs and a staff that caters to every request.

Setting

Within the gated community at Four Seasons Punta Mita, the villa is 50 yards from the beach on Mexico’s Pacific Coast.

  • On the 9th fairway of a Jack Nicklaus golf course (“kalika” means “golf course” in the owner’s native tongue, Basque)
  • Access to two private beach clubs and a highly attentive staff
  • Views of the Banderas Bay

Bed & Bath

The five spacious, Balinese-inspired bedrooms have completely retractable walls to let in ocean breezes.

  • Paintings by Mexican artists hang on the bedroom walls
  • Many of the most interesting furnishings in the house were custom-made using local materials
  • Four master bedrooms have enormous en suite bathrooms

Common Areas

The 10,000-square-foot space is decorated with artwork and accent pieces acquired by the owners during vacations around the world, including trips to the South Pacific and the Seychelles.

  • Extras include a media room with more than 850 DVDs and fitness center
  • Thatch-roofed living and dining area
  • Gourmet kitchen has an herb garden

About the area

About 40 minutes north of the Puerto Vallarta airport, the Punta Mita peninsula is a land of gated communities and five-star resorts like the St. Regis and Four Seasons. Thanks to its beautiful beaches, world-class surf spots and luxury residences, it’s sometimes referred to as the "Malibu of Mexico.” Though high on price and low on infrastructure, the lush, idyllic setting more than makes up for any out-of-the-way hassles.

What to do

  • Eat. All of the restaurants at the Four Seasons are excellent. Try Aramara for modern Mexican cuisine in a white tablecloth setting and Bahia for grilled meats and seafoods. Ketsi, the poolside eatery, is run by superstar chef Richard Sandoval.
  • Golf. The 200-acre Jack Nicklaus-designed Pacifico Golf Course at the Four Seasons is rated one of the best in the world. Eight holes border the whale-packed ocean waters, including the famous Hole 3B — the "Tail of the Whale” — on a small natural isle just offshore.
  • Surf. Because of Punta Mita’s sometimes rocky shoreline and ever-changing currents and winds, the best way to check out the area’s fabled surf spots is via a small boat with a knowledgeable guide. Mictlan Surf School, in the village of Punta de Mita, can hook you up with both.
  • Snorkel. Teeming with manta rays, octopus, turtles, dolphins and whales, the national parklands of the Marietas Islands are a snorkeler’s dream. A boat tour there is a must.
  • Ride. Who says you have to be in vaquero country to ride a horse? At the Rancho Mi Chaparrita, just north of the peninsula, you can step into the stirrups for a gallop along the beach.
  • Fish. Punta Mita is famous in the sportfishing world for its sailfish, marlin, amberjack, mahimahi and huge “cow tuna,” which have been known to approach 400 pounds. You’ll find a number of charter companies in Punta de Mita, including the excellent English-speaking Y-Knot Fishing and Tours.

  • What I liked

The staff was phenomenal! The house was beautiful and comfortable, the food we ate at the house was exceptional. It was one of the most pleasant vacations ever, we had a fantastic time.

    What I disliked

The area is beautiful and felt very safe. The downside was that there weren't many local activities in the immediate area, other than at the Four Seasons or St Regis. So, any activities had to be arranged at a distance and with transportation.

  • What I liked

The house is fabulous and the service by the staff incredible! We ate at two fantastic little restaurants on the beach that would put any gourmet restaurant in the US to shame!

    What I disliked

The beaches are not very nice, quite rocky and not many water sports or things to do. Although the house is on the 9th hole of an incredible golf course it is handled by the Four Seasons and unreasonable expensive even though NOBODY was golfing. This time of the year is very hot and muggy which is probably the reason we were able to get a seat.
