The Skinny On a rise overlooking Sandy Bay, Scotch on the Rocks is a five-bedroom villa with uninterrupted Caribbean views. Surrounded by orchid-filled gardens, with hammocks and benches set beneath towering palms, the home feels like a secluded hideaway, but Ocho Rios is five minutes away.

The Look With its tiered verandas and terraces, the two-story villa vaguely resembles a teal-and-white wedding cake. Inside, however, the house is more handsome than pretty, with travertine floors, mahogany furnishings and comfortable overstuffed sofas — interiors befitting its original owner, the Scottish-born Earl of Mansfield, who built the home in the 1950s.

Would Suit Naturalists. The kidney-shaped freshwater pool is secluded enough for skinny-dipping (though with a staff of five you’re rarely completely alone).

Room to Nab The master suite has a sitting area and dressing room, but any of the three upstairs bedrooms, with private verandahs, antique furnishings and crisp white linens, will do.

The Wow Taking in the views of the vast, turquoise Caribbean from the second-floor deck, with Bryan’s famous rum punch in hand — and the smell of Ms. Cherry’s honey hoisin pork chops and chocolate black satin pie wafting from the kitchen.

About the area

Scotch on the Rocks is a five-minute drive from Ocho Rios, a port town on Jamaica’s north coast and the fictional home of Miss Taro in Dr. No. It was here that Ian Fleming and Noel Coward settled in the 1950s, lured by verdant flora and sugary stretches of sand. But the beach isn’t the only draw. There are ample opportunities for other outdoorsy activities, from waterfall hikes and zipline tours to a jet ski safari and rain forest bobsled ride.

What to do

  • Eat. In town, the Jamaica Inn is one of the island’s classiest establishments, and its elegant Dinner Terrace is a must for Jamaican-inflected fare like ackee and saltfish. The menu changes nightly, and men must wear jackets. Dress down for jerk chicken, hush puppies and rice and peas at Scotchie’s Too.
  • Drink. A quick 10-minute taxi ride from “Ochi” is Chris Blackwell’s famous resort, GoldenEye. Sample a cocktail made with Blackwell’s eponymous rum at the Bizot Beach Bar.
  • Hike. Trek hand-in-hand with like-minded adventure-seekers up Dunn’s River Falls, a 940-foot waterfall just outside Ocho Rios. At the top you’ll be rewarded with the chance to stand underneath the chilly falling waters and plunge into the clear lagoon.
  • Ride. Just outside Ocho Rios is Chukka Cove Farm, the island’s premier equestrian complex. Sign up for a half-day ride through Chukka Caribbean Adventures, a tour operator that also has river tubing, mountain biking and jeep expeditions.
  • Beach. Ten minutes east of Ocho Rios is Reggae Beach, a secluded cove surrounded by palm trees, locals and savvy tourists. The beach bar blasts reggae and serves fried fish and ice-cold Red Stripe.
  • Zip. Thrill-seekers should hit up Mystic Mountain Rainforest Adventures, smack in the heart of Ocho Rios, for a chance to bobsled or zipline through the tropical trees. Environmentalists can take the more relaxed tour or skyride and learn about this precious ecosystem.
  • Bike. The Blue Mountain Bicycle Tour is an 18-mile downhill ride that starts high up in the mountains and descends through the rain forest, with stops for photo ops and waterfall swimming.
