About the home

Just outside the resort enclave of Nusa Dua, Villa Kubu spreads out over seemingly endless space. The modernist mansion spans 7,500 square feet, with sleek, unbroken lines and floor-to-ceiling glass doors. Outside, the views over the Indian Ocean extend as far as the eye can see from the cascading edge of the 27-foot infinity pool.

The villa’s decor cleverly uses repetition and reflection to add to the immeasurable impression of the house. A row of lime-green pillows evenly accents a long indigo couch in the great common room, and headboards of patterned mirrors lengthen the bedrooms. The real secret to the vast feel of Kubu, though, is the ocean view from every room.

Kubu is the largest of several homes sheltered in the Heavenly Residence complex. It’s not for travelers looking to immerse themselves in Balinese culture. But your live-in butler can arrange biking or snorkeling trips around the island. And nearby golden sand beaches and torchlit restaurants at neighboring resorts offer a superlative taste of the island’s famous chill-out vibe.

Setting

Located in the Heavenly Residence complex, Kubu is just outside the tourist enclave of Nusa Dua.

  • The infinity pool overlooks the Indian Ocean.
  • Attached to the pool, the infinity hot tub has Jacuzzi jets.
  • The expansive pool deck has wave-shaped deck chairs, a card table, a picnic area and a covered daybed piled with pillows.

Bed & Bath

The villa has three King bedrooms and one Twin bedroom, each with a large en-suite bathroom. An extra bathroom is downstairs for poolside access.

  • All bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms with marble furnishings; King bedroom showers have floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ocean.
  • Second-story King bedrooms have private balconies; the lower-level King room is more private.

Common Areas

The villa has shared spaces on all three levels.

  • The living room has a plasma TV with a DVD menu and a Bose sound system with a fully loaded iPod.
  • A giant mirror behind the banquet table means every seat has an ocean view.
  • Furniture of woven rattan, sea grass and fabrics durable to salty air

About the area

On the east coast of Bali, Nusa Dua is filled with upscale resorts, golden sand beaches and not much else. The postcard scenes of mountain peaks, local temples and terraced rice paddies are miles away, but this tourist enclave is the right place to be pampered.

What to do

  • Eat. Nusa Dua Beach Grill has fresh local seafood, cold smoothies and free taxi transfers at dinnertime. Pack a blanket and pick up sandwiches stuffed with artisanal meats and cheeses at Gourmand Deli in the St. Regis resort. Eat the homemade chocolates inside, before they melt.
  • Drink. The outdoor Salsa Bar at the Grand Hyatt Hotel has two-for-one cocktails from 6 to 8 p.m. every night — perfect timing for sunset views of the ocean.
  • Beach. The villa complex has a small, uninspiring beach, even at low tide. To play in the waves, taxi over to golden Geger Beach, where local entrepreneurs will bring cocktails to your lounge chair.
  • Watch. Next door to Heavenly Residence, Nikko Hotel’s stone amphitheater sets the stage for traditional dance performances.
  • Cook. For a taste of the local culture, spend a day learning how to make Balinese specialties at nearby Bumbu Bali.
  • Explore. Just off the coast, you can hold a baby sea turtle at Pulau Penyu. Your butler can arrange a half-day excursion to the island via glass-bottomed boat.
  • Pray. Uluwatu is Bali’s most impressive cliffside temple, and the path to it is lined with devilishly funny macaques. Arrange for a taxi in the late afternoon and stay for sunset.
  • Golf. Play an epic round at Bali Golf and Country Club, where the impressive Mount Agung looms behind the fourth putting green.
