The Skinny On Oahu's North Shore, near surf mecca Waimea Bay, Ke Iki Vista is a modern seaside retreat surrounded by jagged lava rock, powder-soft white sand and brilliant blue water.

The Look Interiors are sleek and contemporary, with granite and hardwood accents throughout and windows everywhere. Bedrooms are the one place where you find a splash of local color: Wild bedspreads add a bit of whimsy to the otherwise neutral color palette.

Would Suit Off-the-beaten-path travelers. The North Shore is a dramatic stretch of coastline whose natural beauty and low-key vibe is a welcome counterpoint to touristy Waikiki.

Room to Nab All four bedrooms are spacious, but the master is a sprawling 1,200 square feet.

The Wow The views. From the two-story house you can see spinner dolphins in the summer months and professional surfers battling the impressive waves in the winter. Shake up a Blue Hawaii and head for the lanai off the living room; the folding doors open completely to bring the beach vista that much closer.

About the area

Oahu’s North Shore is significantly less touristy than other parts of the island (notably Waikiki), but that’s part of its charm. The rugged coast is most famous for its surf breaks. October through March is when waves really explode, but the water is still plenty powerful in the summer months, and you’ll find plenty of surfers here throughout the year. The region’s hub is Haleiwa, where you should go for funky surf shops, roadside food stands and the island’s best shaved ice.

What to do

  • Eat. Line up with locals for shoestring fries and crisp mahimahi in a plastic basket at Kua ‘Aina. For something slightly more upscale, try the surfside Ola at Turtle Bay, where local ingredients get a haute twist. You can’t go wrong with the grilled island catch of the day.
  • Drink. Early arrivals get the prime sunset seating at Jameson’s by the Sea. Hang with the surf crowd at Haleiwa Joe’s, a harbor-facing watering hole with fruity cocktails and pupu platters.
  • Shop. Haleiwa is heavy on surf shops, but the best one is Barnfield’s Raging Isle Sports & Cycle, known for its custom-made surfboards. Founded in 1982 on the North Shore, Xcel is your go-to spot for wetsuits and other water sportswear.
  • Fly. Hana Hou Air runs 15-minute glider rides over the majestic Waianae Mountain Range. Flights depart from nearby Dillingman Airfield, in Mokuleia.
  • Explore. Waimea Valley’s 1,875 acres of rain forest and mountain gardens contain 6,000 species of some of the rarest plants on earth. All trails lead to the picturesque Waimea Falls.
  • Golf. Turtle Bay Resort has two golf courses, including an Arnold Palmer-designed 18-hole championship course whose 17th hole sits 100 feet from the ocean.
