The Skinny Built as a priory in 1032 by Benedictine monks and later transformed by a 19th-century baron into his noble home, Chateau St. Philippe still has a regal air. It doesn't hur that your every whim — spa services, expert-led wine tours, and custom-fit bikes — is at your command.

The Look This alpine castle combines original details — peaked turrets, vaulted ceilings, exposed stone and wood beams — with mod cons, like the tricked-out game room and provate screening rom and high-end appliances (like a Lacanche Volnay range) in the spacious stone and marble kitchen.

Would Suit The pampered set. The most challenging activity for guests: choosing from the private chef’s gourmet repertoire. Duck with balsamic figs or roasted quail with wild rice couscous? It’s good to be the king.

Room to Nab Each of ten bedrooms has its own unique charms. Some have fireplaces, stone window seats or niches for reading or writing. Some have sleigh beds, while others have romantic canopy beds.

The Wow The fairytale-like setting, on 17 acres lush with apple, cherry and lilac trees.

Setting

This 11th-century chateau is in the foothills of St. Jean de la Porte in the majestic French Alps.

  • The home is 14 miles from Chambery, the capital of the Savoie region
  • The property sits amid a community of vineyards and dairy farms
  • The area is a hub for alpine sports; nearby Albertville hosted the 1992 Winter Olympics

Bed & Bath

10 bedrooms, accommodating up to 20 guests, offer a variety of beds — sleigh, iron or canopy — while most of the 13 baths are cleverly integrated into roomy, en-suite nooks.

  • Bedrooms vary: Some have fireplaces, stone window seats, niches for reading or writing
  • Roll-away beds are available upon request
  • All baths have modern fixtures, some with rain showers; two have baths

Common Areas

A dozen spaces for leisure include gardens, screening room and cavernous dining room.

  • The screening room has loveseats and a 10-foot screen
  • Game room has billiards, ping-pong table, darts, casino table, board games, Xbox and satellite TV; the library has a fireplace and eclectic books
  • The modern kitchen has high-end appliances, including a Lacanche Volnay range

About the area

The Savoie region is synonymous with cheese, wine, Olympic skiing, mountain sports and healing hot springs. The neighboring town of St. Pierre d’Albigny has a medieval castle, a vineyard and a popular recreational lake. Bucolic Annecy, cultural Chambery and the hot springs of Aix-les-Bains are within a half-hour drive.

What to do

  • Dine. A Michelin-starred meal at the lakeside Le Bateau Ivre is worth the 30-minute drive. Chef Jean-Pierre Jacob’s playful, elegant fare pairs well with views of Lake Bourget.
  • Drink. Mondeuse, Chignin and Pinot Noir are the star grapes of the region. The chateau staff can arrange wine tours, or go it yourself. Domaine Grisard and Domaine Saint Germain are highlights.
  • Soak. The thermal waters of Aix-les-Bains were discovered in the 5th century. Experience their curative, and relaxing, properties at the Thermes Nationaux.
  • Shop. The nearby city of Chambery is known for its high-end boutiques; it also hosts an antiques fair the second Saturday of every month and a flea market every Sunday.
  • Schuss. There’s no shortage of downhill and cross-country trails. The mountains of La Clusaz, just 25 miles away, are especially accessible.
  • Fly. View the alps from another perspective: Paragliding is enormously popular in the area. The qualified instructors at the area’s leading “parapente” school offer one- to five-day classes.
