The Skinny With the iconic glass Pompidou Center literally next door and the lively Marais a quick jaunt away, Paris is your playground at this two-bedroom apartment on Rue St-Martin, one of the city's oldest streets.

The Look Owned by an interior designer, stylish Pompidou Center Gem pairs exposed wood-beam ceilings and stone walls with contemporary art and sleek finishes in all the right places, including the polished wood and stainless steel kitchen and the white-on-white bathroom. It's the perfect blend of history and modern minimalism.

Would Suit Besties: With two connected bedrooms and a sleeper sofa, the apartment can sleep five – but you won't have a ton of privacy.

Room to Nab The spacious master has plenty of personality with exposed beam ceilings, antique bedside tables and a tapestry hung over the queen-size bed.

The Wow The details: pierced metal lamps from Turkey (which send a kaleidoscope of shadows over the walls) and lavish, oversize curtains share space with graffiti paintings and a black-and-white Fornasetti chair.

About the area

Divided into Right Bank and Left Bank, central Paris is compact and intense. For all its historic architecture, famous museums and monuments, it is very much a worked-in, lived-in city. Behind fine facades you may well find international businesses, government ministries, schools or learned institutions. Every district has its own character, neighborhood bistros and shops. Near the Pompidou Center, between Les Halles and the Marais and just a couple of blocks from the Seine and the Ile de la Cité, Pompidou Center Gem has access to just about everything. But you needn’t wander far to live la vie Parisienne. The 4th Arrondissement is full of cafés, churches, museums and shops.

What to do

  • Eat. Down the street, Alain Ducasse’s Benoït serves upscale bistro staples, like buttery, garlicky escargot, in a classic Belle Epoque setting. Take in the incredible views and modish brasserie fare at Georges, the fashionable restaurant at the top of the Pompidou Center.
  • Drink. Café Beaubourg is an eternally fashionable rendez-vous for drinks, light meals and ringside views of the Pompidou Center. Run by the crew behind Le 404 (the amped-up Moroccan restaurant), Andy Wahloo is a kitschy Arabian Nights–style cocktail lounge where paint cans double as stools. The cocktails are excellent.
  • See. The Pompidou Center is a must for its ogle-worthy architecture and collection of modern art. The bookshop and program of films and performing arts are both worth checking out — and pay attention to the views from the escalator.
  • Hear. The neighboring gothic church of St-Merri puts on free classical concerts every weekend from September through July.
  • Spa. Recover from sightseeing with soothing massages or a session in the Turkish baths at the Moroccan-style Bains du Marais.
  • Shop. Score vintage finds and exclusive perfumes at the tiny boutiques lining the Marais. Designers like Vanessa Bruno, Martin Grant and Christophe Lemaire also have showrooms here. For day-to-day cooking needs, stock up on produce at the Marché des Enfants-Rouge.
