The Skinny St.Germain Luxury is a petite, but well-located, apartment in the heart of St-Germain-des-Prés, on the street where Picasso painted Guernica in 1937.

The Look Though compact, the apartment is well-proportioned — and, although it's only on the second floor, windows on two sides to keep it sufficiently light and airy. Globes, objets d’art and eclectic mirrors combined with classical furnishings, lovely hardwood floors and soothing neutral tones lend an erudite feel, making this the perfect base for playing out the civilized St-Germain lifestyle.

Would Suit Couples. The apartment can sleep four, but once the sofabed is opened there’s limited wiggle room. Better to make it a cozy hideaway à deux.

Room to Nab There's just one bedroom, a comfortable cocoon with a queen-size bed draped in fine linens and a screen of plants to shield you from the neighbors.

The Wow This is classic Left Bank Paris, the district that invented the French intellectual — even if penniless writers have now largely been replaced by globe-trotting fashionistas. The neighborhood is ideal for practicing the French art of flânerie — which basically translates as idle wandering. Think window shopping, admiring the classic golden stone architecture and pausing for an espresso on a café terrace.

About the area

Divided into Right Bank and Left Bank, central Paris is compact and intense. For all its historic architecture, famous museums and monuments, it is very much a worked-in, lived-in city. Behind fine facades you may well find international businesses, government ministries, schools or learned institutions. Every district has its own character, neighborhood bistros and shops. Rue des Grands-Augustins is a classy street in St-Germain-des-Prés, a quartier that for many means Parisian chic. The 6th Arrondissement is a fashionable destination for its boutiques, art galleries, classic cafés and cinemas, which line the main boulevard and its side streets.

What to do

  • Eat. Up the street, try chef William Ledeuil’s well-thought-out Franco-Asian fare at Ze Kitchen Galerie. Named after the secondhand booksellers on the quay, Guy Savoy’s Les Bouquinistes is the original baby bistro, where you can mingle with art dealers over affordable prix-fixe menus that might include seared duck breast with foie gras and nougat crème brûlée. Nearby, the modern decor at Fogon matches chef Alberto Herraiz’s take on Spanish food.
  • Drink. This is the district that invented the Parisian café in the 17th century. Join the international gliterati at the legendary Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots. Young trendies flock to the more casual Bar du Marché, with its prized sidewalk seating and laid-back dungaree-clad servers.
  • Shop. St-Germain is prime shopping territory. Find quirky knits at Sonia Rykiel , effortless cool trophy jackets and minis at Isabel Marant and gorgeous leather bags at Gérard Darel. Rue de Buci is lined with food, Rue de Seine is the place to go for art galleries and design boutiques, and La Hune has late-night book shopping.
  • See. The apartment is within walking distance of the city’s main sights. Cross the Pont des Arts to admire the art collections in the Louvre or the Pont Neuf to see Notre Dame and the Sainte Chapelle. To the east, in the still-studenty Latin Quarter, the medieval tapestries and artifacts of the Musée National du Moyen Age are displayed in a gothic townhouse.
  • Float. Take a boat tour with Vedettes de Pont Neuf for an overview of the city’s sights. For a river trip without the commentary, catch the hop-on/hop-off Batobus.
  • Relax. A few blocks to the south, the Luxembourg Gardens is the classic Parisian park, with gravel paths, statues, playgrounds and tennis courts.
