The Skinny On Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula, Casa Breeze is a three-bedroom eco-retreat near the sleepy seaside town of San Juanillo.

The Look Despite its jungle setting — and the fact that the lush green vegetation literally grows right over the roof — Breeze is a modern home with sleek white exteriors, sharp angles and furnishings out of Dwell.

Would Suit Environment-minded design buffs. The villa’s gray water is recycled and reused for irrigation, the electricity is supplemented with solar technology and there's a sustainable green roofing system — but the home doesn't skimp in the looks department.

Room to Nab The king-size master has a dual-head shower, a Jacuzzi tub and a private deck.

The Wow The surrounding wildlife: the distant bellow of howler monkeys, the squawk of macaws and the buzz of the hummingbirds flitting above the nectar in the poolside flowers.

About the area

Costa Rica combines lush landscapes with pristine coastlines. It's a blur of green and blue, where you can have your rainforest and your ocean views too. On the Pacific coast, the Nicoya Peninsula is a paradise for beach bums of all ilks (surfers, snorkelers, sunworshippers). It's also home to the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, the country's first federally protected wilderness area. So you can spend your days deciding: Surf or turf?

What to do

  • Eat. Chill out to ambient tunes, beautiful coastal views and delicious stone-baked offerings at Bahia Pizzeria, in San Juanillo. In the seaside village of Montezuma (about a 30-minute drive to the west), Sano Banano is the popular spot and serves an array of international dishes on the open-air terrace. Tasty burritos and refreshing ginger lemonade make for a good lunch. For a changing daily menu of skillfully rendered Mediterranean fusion dishes (think tuna tartare, seared octopus and wood-fired pizza), the place to go is Playa de Los Artistas. Rough-hewn wood tables on the beach are illuminated with paper lanterns, making this a good date spot.
  • Drink. The ocean-view bar at the nearby Tango Mar hotel has able mixologists who whip up superfresh piña coladas.
  • Turtles. Pacific ridley turtles nest in Playa Ostional from July to December (August to September is peak season). To see them up close, take a terp tour with Iguana Expeditions.
  • Yoga. Nosara Yoga offers astanga, restorative and surfer’s yoga. Private classes are available.
  • Snorkel. Take lessons with Coconut Harry’s, in Nosara, and explore the shoreline wonders of the Pacific.
  • Fish. Schedule a charter with Fishing Nosara. Lunch, beer, tackle and an abundance of fish included.
  • Explore. Take the ATV trek through the rain forest, beaches and rivers leading to hidden waterfalls with Monkey Quads.
