About the area

Costa Rica combines lush landscapes with pristine coastlines. It's a blur of green and blue, where you can have your rainforest and your ocean views too. On the Pacific coast, the Nicoya Peninsula is a paradise for beach bums of all ilks (surfers, snorkelers, sunworshippers). It's also home to the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, the country's first federally protected wilderness area. So you can spend your days deciding: Surf or turf?

What to do

  • Eat. In the seaside village of Montezuma (about a 30-minute drive to the west), Sano Banano is the popular spot and serves an array of international dishes on its open-air terrace. Tasty burritos and refreshing ginger lemonade make for a good lunch. For a changing daily menu of skillfully rendered Mediterranean fusion dishes (think tuna tartare, seared octopus and wood-fired pizza), the place to go is Playa de Los Artistas. Rough-hewn wood tables on the beach are illuminated with paper lanterns, making this a special place for a date.
  • Drink. The ocean-view bar at the nearby Tango Mar hotel has able mixologists who whip up superfresh piña coladas.
  • Zipline. Whiz through the rain forest treetops on the Miss Sky Canopy Tour. Its 21 runs and 360-degree views may be the best ways to experience the peninsula’s beautiful landscape.
  • Turtles. Pacific ridley turtles nest in Playa Ostional from July to December (August to September is peak season). To see them up close, take a terp tour with Iguana Expeditions.
  • Ride. Paradise Riding offers a nighttime horseback tour in Playa Junquillal, complete with a sparkling wine picnic. The Kalia concierge can provide you with more info.
  • Dive. To explore the abundant local marine life, take a wreck dive with Paski’s Adventures.
