Beaver Creek has always brought Euro flair to the rare air of the Vail Valley. Way up on the ninth floor of the Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch, the three-bedroom Tuscan Villa penthouse pushes Etruscan sensibilities to the edge of Rocky Mountain rustic, with a stop in the Alps for good measure.

The foyer’s yellow walls, handmade Austrian mirror and formal French chandelier set the scene. Step through arched doorways into your family room, where the centerpiece is a stone fireplace with its thick reclaimed-wood mantle. Carpentry and craftsmanship are front and center in this great room, where you’ll also find antique armoires, planed beam ceilings, handcrafted chairs and ottomans stretched with deer hides. It all opens to a mod kitchen and banquet-worthy dining room, whose eight-person table is bracketed by majestic leather-backed thrones.

The three bedrooms’ neutral carpeting allows more wood furniture and architectural details to standout. The large master bedroom has a framed window nook looking down on the hill, while the smaller master guest bedroom opens to the slopeside terrace. Both have full marble baths, but only the master adds a bubbly Jacuzzi tub for two, heated floors and a walk-in closet.

If this penthouse’s rustic-regal flair doesn’t make you feel like lord of the manor, then the Ritz’s crack staff and roster of amenities will. Your noble digs will know not one ski or wet boot, thanks to a ski butler well trained to the needs of schussers.

About the area

Beaver Creek is an exclusive gated ski village that has some of the most stunning mountain scenery in the Rockies. In the winter glide down powder ski runs, including Birds of Prey, site of the only World Cup ski race in the United States. When the snow melts, hike through aspen groves and alpine meadows, fish crystal-clear streams or golf at your choice of seven premier high-altitude courses.

What to do

  • Eat. The Rocky Mountain incarnation of Wolfgang Puck’s flagship Spago has all the celeb chef’s signature dishes (Ahi Tuna Cones) but pays homage to the mountain surroundings with regional cuts and produce, like Colorado lamb chops with Hunan eggplant and cilantro-mint vinaigrette. At the base of Beaver Creek Mountain, Belgian master chef Daniel Joly’s Mirabelle is a four-star restaurant whose seasonal menu sets game meats front and center. Zach’s Cabin, near the top of the Bachelor Gulch lift, is open only in winter and is accessible via a “sleigh” pulled up the mountain by snowcat. The open-air ride is worth the chills for Tim McCaw’s culinary creations and views of the moonlit mountains and starry skies.
  • Drink. Crazy Mountain Brewing Company is the Vail Valley’s original microbrewery. Find the hoppy Crazy Mountain Amber Ale on tap at the Beaver Creek Chophouse.
  • Speed. Every December the world descends upon Beaver Creek for the Birds of Prey World Cup, featuring one of the fastest downhill courses on the tour. Strap on your sticks and test your skill on its steeps — no spandex speed suit required.
  • Golf. Just down the mountain from your digs, the Red Sky Golf Club has two of the nation’s most stunning courses, one designed by Tom Fazio and the other by Greg Norman. The concierge has preferred tee times and can get access to the 13,000-square-foot clubhouse on the Fazio course.
  • Cast. Crystal-clear tributaries of the mighty Colorado River, including the Eagle and Roaring Fork, surround Beaver Creek. All afford some of the finest trout fly fishing in the West. Gore Creek Fly Fisherman has been casting in these streams for more than 30 years and offers the Vail Valley’s go-to guides.
  • Relax. The Ritz-Carlton’s 21,000-square-foot spa caters to the sporty set. The Mountain Man package is a three-hour relaxation fest that starts with the spa’s signature massage and includes a facial designed to protect and heal wind- and sun-burned skin.
