Rising from the base of the Bachelor Gulch ski run, steps from the eponymous high-speed lift, the Ritz-Carlton captures the essence of the Robert Reamer–led “parkitecture” movement. The entire complex upholds the National Park lodge aesthetic to a luxurious degree, but only the eight penthouses perched on its top floors truly enjoy the lofted spaces and homey log cabin feel created by those gabled roofs.

The largest of those is West Wing, a four-bedroom homage to the natural stylings and sporting life of the American West. Beneath a 20-foot cathedral ceiling hung with a tiered, hand-forged iron and leather chandelier, the Family Room is the heart of this home. Pillowy-soft down sofas and chenille chairs invite schussers to warm their weary bones by the stone fireplace, while tanned furs strewn over wood floors add a hunting lodge feel. Antique skis, snowshoes and even a kayak adorn the walls, but the real standouts on these vertical spaces are the original paintings and photographs, including the stark minimalist landscapes of Chinese artist Liang Wei.

Though you feel tucked away in your own cabin in the woods, your every conceivable need is met by the full force of the Ritz-Carlton staff, including their crack concierge, who can procure reservations at any of the Vail Valley’s choice restaurants, and a ski butler to keep your sticks waxed and ready for tomorrow’s runs.

  • Steaming outdoor heated pool and three hot tubs

About the area

Beaver Creek is an exclusive, gated ski village offering some of the most stunning mountain scenery in the Rockies. In the winter glide down powder ski runs, including Birds of Prey, site of the only World Cup ski race in the United States. When the snow melts, hike through aspen groves and alpine meadows, fish crystal clear streams or golf at your choice of seven premier high-altitude courses.

What to do

  • Eat. The Rocky Mountain incarnation of Wolfgang Puck’s flagship, Spago, has all the celeb chef’s signature dishes (ahi tuna cones), but pays homage to the mountain surroundings with regionally produced ingredients, like Colorado lamb chops with Hunan eggplant and cilantro-mint vinaigrette. At the base of Beaver Creek Mountain, Belgian master chef Daniel Joly’s Mirabelle is a 4-star restaurant whose seasonal menu sets game meats front and center. Near the top of the Bachelor Gulch lift, Zach’s Cabin is open only in winter and accessed via a “sleigh” pulled up the mountain by snowcat. The open-air ride is worth the chills for Tim McCaw’s culinary creations and views of the moonlit mountains and starry skies.
  • Drink. Crazy Mountain Brewing Company is the Vail Valley’s original microbrewery. Find the hoppy Crazy Mountain Amber Ale on tap at the Beaver Creek Chophouse
  • Speed. Every December the world descends upon Beaver Creek for the Birds of Prey World Cup, featuring one of the fastest downhill courses on the tour. Strap on your sticks and test your skills on its steeps — no spandex speed suit required
  • Golf. Just down the mountain from your digs, the Red Sky Golf Club has 2 of the nation’s most stunning courses — one designed by Tom Fazio and the other by Greg Norman. The concierge has preferred tee times and can get access to the 13,000-square-foot clubhouse on the Fazio course.
  • Cast. Crystal clear tributaries of the mighty Colorado River, including the Eagle and Roaring Fork rivers, surround Beaver Creek. All afford some of the finest trout fly fishing in the West. Gore Creek Fly Fisherman have been casting in these streams for more than 30 years and are the go-to guides in the Vail Valley
  • Relax. The Ritz-Carlton’s 21,000-square-foot spa caters to the sporty set. The Mountain Man package is a 3-hour relaxation-fest starting with the spa’s signature massage and followed by a facial designed to protect and heal wind- and sunburned skin
