About the home

Our editors have been here and it has met our standards.

With a waterfront location on North America’s largest alpine lake, this four-bedroom townhouse feels far removed from the hustle of nearby South Lake Tahoe. The home’s wooded lot provides further shelter from man-made distractions, while floor-to-ceiling windows in the two-story great room make the most of your natural environs. Still, if it’s Vegas-style indulgence or laid-back ski culture you’re after, both are a quick drive away.

The home combines classic ski chalet architecture — overhanging eaves, rough-cut pine beams, peaked ceilings — with all the modern amenities you’d expect from a luxury villa. The open kitchen has sleek granite countertops, polished chrome fixtures and a dedicated wine refrigerator, while the back deck is kitted out with a built-in Viking grill. There’s also a media room, complete with Bose surround sound and a flat-screen television, and an elevator (should your legs feel a bit wobbly after a day on the slopes).

All bedrooms have en-suite marble bathrooms and rustic-chic bedding, but if you’ve got dibs, the master suite is this villa’s crown jewel. The palatial suite has a fireplace, a wet bar and a private deck perched directly over Lake Tahoe. (On windy nights you can hear the water lapping at the shore.) The adjoining bathroom has heated floors, a steam shower and a Jacuzzi soaking tub — the perfect place to après-ski.

About the area

On North America’s largest alpine lake and surrounded by dramatic mountain vistas, South Lake Tahoe is a breathtaking oasis on the California side of the Sierra Nevadas. But the town is far from just a placid escape to nature. From casinos with four-diamond restaurants and lavish spas to some of the West Coast’s best ski slopes, South Lake Tahoe is an ideal destination for unwinding or thrill-seeking, whatever the season. In winter, skiers and snowboarders flock to Heavenly for slopes with a view; in summer, the south shore is a major destination for jet-skiers, kayakers and hikers.

What to do

  • Eat. Brave the frenetic gaming floor at Montbleu Casino to nab a table at Ciera, a modern steakhouse with an updated approach to tried-and-true standards. Try the truffle mac and cheese — you’ll thank (and hate) us. It’s worth the drive to North Tahoe for San Francisco chef Traci des Jardins’s French-Californian fare at Manzanita at the Ritz-Carlton Highlands. The duck meatballs and red wine–braised short ribs are highlights.
  • Drink. Apres Wine Company’s bar and bistro has a well-edited wine selection and live entertainment by jazz guitarists. In the summer, try Brook’s Bar & Deck for a water’s-edge setting and a stiff g&t. Opal Lounge channels Vegas with its go-go dancers, bottle service and top-notch spin doctors.
  • Play. Montbleu (formerly Caesars) is the best of Tahoe’s myriad casinos, with a 40,000-square-foot gaming floor (complete with Chihuly ceiling installations), race and sports book and poker room.
  • Shop. Make the hour drive to the north shore, where you’ll find rustic-chic home boutiques, art galleries and antique shops. Stop by Hemmings and Jarrett for locally produced pine tables and wrought-iron bed frames, while Alpine Heritage Antiques is the place to go for hand-painted wood carvings and other vintage accent pieces.
  • Shred. From fall through late spring, skiers and boarders flock to Heavenly for its legendary powder trails with lake views. During drier seasons, the resort makes its own snow at the peak. Take a gondola up the mountain and escape to a man-made winter wonderland looking over the lake — and be sure to step off midway at the observation deck. For experienced skiers and snowboarders, take the Skyline Trail to the Milky Way Bowl, an expansive, powdery heaven that leads into the heavily gladed (double black diamond–rated) Mott Canyon. Less confident skiers can get an equally gorgeous ride on Ridge Run. Sierra at Tahoe has the area’s best terrain parks and the South Shore’s only superpipe.
